PLT GreenWorks! Grants Grow Forest Stewardship
Environmental education, service learning and forest stewardship go hand-in-hand in the latest round of GreenWorks! grants awarded by Project Learning Tree® PLT. The grants, totaling $42,000, provide funding for a wide array of student-initiated projects.
The GreenWorks! grants were awarded to 27 schools and youth organizations in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Nine of the grants, funded in part by the U.S. Forest Service, went to registered PLT GreenSchools! to support students in their efforts to make their schools greener and healthier.
While the projects funded are as different as the schools and students implementing them, they do have much in common. All are designed to improve student learning, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics known as STEM–subjects that the United States national academic standards seek to address. All PLT GreenWorks! projects involve student initiative, and all are being undertaken with one or more community partners. Grant recipients are required to match the GreenWorks! funding with financial or in-kind contributions from other sources.
